Hegar Compared Border Policies To China’s Treatment Of The Uyghurs

In 2020, Hegar Compared U.S. Border Agents With China’s Treatment Of The Uyghurs. HEGAR: “It is a huge problem for us globally that we are committing human rights violations on our southern border. And that’s what family separation is. This administration came out proudly and said that family separation was enacted to deter people from coming to this country. Not because separating them was for, you know, stopping human trafficking or had some kind of national security impact, but to deter people. So they are terrorizing people and children, and doing so as a deterrent to control behavior. That’s what a tyrant does, okay? That’s not what the leader of the free world should be doing. So when we are committing human rights violations on our southern border, not only is it immoral but it is also impacting our ability to have influence globally. We cannot lecture China on their treatment of the Uyghurs or, you know, while we’re doing that we also can’t lecture China on the brutality that we see in Hong Kong while we do what we did in Lafayette Square. We cannot start looking like the countries and the governments that we are supposed to be, you know, the opposite of.” (MJ Hegar, Remarks At Meyerland Democrats Meet & Greet, 6/24/20; 23:15-24:20)
